scissors 花鋏(はなばさみ)

Ikebana begins with the cutting of foliage. The scissors used in Ikebana are a little bit different from those used in general housework. As beginners progress through their lessons, they learn how to use scissors, resulting in their hands getting use to scissor techniques. Special scissors for both adults and children are provided in the classrooms, so if you do not have your own, you can use a pair from among those provided.

kenzan 剣山(けんざん)

Kenzan (also known as “Pin-point Holders”) are for the purpose of securing flowers in vases, so they are tools that are frequently used in Ikebana. They are extremely valuable tools for arranging flowers vertically and for setting the direction in which the flowers are made to face. It is very important to choose a pin-point holder that fits well in your vase. Various sizes of pin-point holders are provided in the classroom, making it possible for you to use one that best fits your vase.

vases 花器(かき)

In Ikebana, the vessel used for arranging flowers is called a vase. A vase should not be considered simply a vessel for arranging flowers. The major points to be considered in arranging flowers are achieving harmony between the flowers, the vase, and the place where they are to be displayed. Vases of a broad variety of shapes and colors are provided in the classroom for use by everyone from children to adults. During the lessons, you will also find enjoyment in receiving advice and thinking about what flowers to arrange in which vase depending on the flowers that you receive on that particular day.
